2008, total Filipino population in Canada numbered to 456,366.
Majority of the population reside in Greater Toronto, Greater
Vancouver, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and
Montreal.
Towards the end of 2009,
Typhoon Ondoy (Tropical Storm Ketsana) badly hit the Philippines
and afftected thousands of Filipinos. Aside from the $5 million
humanitarian assistance pledged to the victims of Typhoon Ondoy,
the Government of Canada announced special immigration measures for
the victims.
New and existing
applications from Canadian Citizens, permanent residents and
protected persons with close family members in the Philippines
directly and significantly affected by the typhoon will receive
priority application processing by Citizenship and Immigration
Canada (CIC).
By the end of 2009, more
than 400 Filipinos have already arrived in Canada under the Typhoon
related fast-track immigration procedures. We have yet to see
from Statistics Canada and CIC the number of new immigrants for the
whole year 2009.
By 2017, Canada's 150th
Birthday, the Filipino community is projected to reach 540,000 in
population, topping the half million mark. However, with recent
changes to CIC priorities in late 2009, we can expect more
Filipinos to arrive in Canada.
